Most of the rules are similar including: the size of the field; the non-contact nature of play; and the length of the matches. The key and fundamental difference between FootballSSG and futsal is that we play on turf and use a turf ball (like you would use in your full-sized-field winter competition). This is because we want our players to improve their technical football skills, something we feel is best done using the ball and the surface they will experience in their regular winter competition. You might just want to have fun. You might want to improve or enhance your fitness. All of these are valid reasons to play FootballSSG, Manly Warringah summer soccer. And it helps to improve tactical skills such as using space, passing and moving and playing a through ball.

All urgent/important communications (such as postponement info) are made via Twitter

We exclusively use Twitter (now called ‘X’) for all urgent/important communications, this has been communicated to all players via email several times.

We do so because we can create a message and we know it will be delivered, with a notification (like an SMS), to everyone who’s following us almost instantaneously and certainly within 60 seconds.

We cannot get that many emails sent instantaneously and therefore cannot rely on that medium for urgent communications. We have tried other socials in the past but have found that we cannot rely on them either. Twitter remains by far and away our best tool for this purpose and until we’ve found something else (which certainly won’t happen this season) we will continue to rely on it.

8 December - The Spring 2023 season has concluded

All match results for all competitions have been entered and Winners and Runners Up have been determined. Thank you to everyone that took part in this year’s season. Win, lose or draw ... we hope you achieved the main objective ... to just have fun!

We are unfortunately not able to run a Summer Months (January to March) competition in 2024 as Council declined our long standing arrangement/booking of the fields through the end of March, rather advising that we could only book them through middle March. That unfortunately left us with only 6-7 weeks which is clearly far too short a period for a season. Let’s all hope that Council adjust their position for future years so that we can all return to having fun, playing the sport we want to play, during the Summer months.

3 November - Statement from Stuart addressing the social media activity “frenzy” that’s unfolding

There’s been an avalanche of “cancel culture” style activity on social media in the past couple of days, resultant from a simple misunderstanding on Wednesday afternoon (which misunderstanding was corrected within 70 minutes) which lead one FootballSSG Mum to write some rather inciteful words in a post on the Northern Beaches Living Facebook Group page. That post included misinformation/falsehoods and attacked the competition and me personally, strongly suggesting sexism and misogyny, and amongst other things resulted in persons with no relationship with FootballSSG making threats to us. I take the opportunity, with this week’s update to the web site, to make this statement openly, honestly, not hiding behind an “anonymous user” Facebook account, for all and sundry that are interested.

3 November - All results from the past week are in

What else do you get when you play FootballSSG ?

FootballSSG is the Northern Beaches’ longest-running, best organised and most fun 6-a-side football competition.

Included in your registration fee is, well, pretty much everything. We provide every player with a full playing kit (jersey, shorts and socks) plus a goalkeeper jersey for each team. We provide referees for every game, plenty of match footballs on every field for every game, official time keepers, on site assistance and the best, clear, accurate, relevant and timely communications that you’ll experience in a community-based sporting organisation.

You simply need to organise your team of 8-10 players and a manager. We look after everything else.

The role of the manager at FootballSSG is very, very simple. Your tasks are:
 - at the advised time before the season starts, collect (or have someone else collect) your team’s player kits
 - distribute your team’s player kits to the players
 - before the start of each game, complete the team’s details on the Match Record Sheet
 - during the game, organise (or have someone else organise) the player substitutions such that every player gets a fair go
 - at the conclusion of each game, sign the Match Record Sheet to confirm your agreement with the score as recorded

When we established the competition back in 2007, we wanted to create a place where players could just come and have fun, where parents could enjoy themselves and not feel pressured to ‘volunteer’ and where the referees and field officials felt safe and supported as they learn to be the best they can be. All these years later, with various ‘tweaks’ along the way, we’re confident we’ve got things just about as right as they can be.

We have NEVER missed a game due to wet weather

This is a claim that we can no longer make. After twelve years and almost 20,000 games scheduled, in our Spring 2019 season we were unable to re-schedule and play 49 games that we chose not to play on the day that Sydney was placed under a State Of Emergency due to extreme heat and bushfire activity/threat. In the weeks that followed that day we were affected by rain and so lost those 49 games.

We really were not happy about it, but the fact is that now we can only claim that over twelve years and 20,000 scheduled games we have only missed 0.25% of games due to extreme weather events.

We still know you just want to play, so we only use the best quality fields with the best irrigation and drainage systems, so you get to play. After all, that is what you want, isn’t it? When you register to play, you just want to be able to play!

STILL Sydney’s favourite small-sided football competition

- 760 players in 2008 (our first year) -
- Over 2,500 players in 2013 -
- 4,500 players in 2017 -
That’s 35% growth, year on year!

Be a part of the best organised and best fun small sided football competition in Sydney. We’ve got something for everyone:

- Boys, Girls, Men’s & Ladies’ competitions -
- All age groups from Under 6 to Over 35 -

We’re the best, because we’re the most fun!

14 August - Registrations will close soon

We are right at the pointy end of the registrations process.

We have space for additional individual players, small groups (ie - not full teams) and for full teams who wish to play at Curl Curl on Mondays. Check which competitions are offered at Curl Curl on Mondays.

We have very limited space for individual players, small groups (ie - not full teams) and for full teams who wish to play at Rat Park on Tuesdays or Thursdays. Check which competitions are offered at Rat Park on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

If you have been invited to join an existing team playing at Rat Park on Wednesdays, you can still register. However, please do not register to play at Rat Park on Wednesdays if you’ve not been specifically invited by a team to join them because we are full at Rat Park on Wednesdays and we’ll just have to give you a refund.

Each year we get lots of players registering as individuals or small groups who are hoping to be assembled in to teams, and we do our very best to try to get them all placed in to teams. It doesn't work out for everyone, we'd estimate that we're successful 90-95% of the time.

The process of placing these players in to teams starts this week. Individuals or small groups are placed in to teams on a "first come" basis, so our advice to everyone who wants to play is to register ASAP as that will put you nearer the front of the queue.

Obviously, if it doesn't work out, we will provide a full refund. Please note, however,  that if you register using an Active Kids Voucher and we're unable to get you in a team, there is no way for us to "refund" that Voucher for you (it's not how the Service NSW system works) but we would happily transfer the value of that Voucher to another Authorised Active Kids Provider when you register with them ... this is explained on the Government's web site https://www.sport.nsw.gov.au/active-kids-recipient-TandC

If you have a small group, for example - two or three players, please contact Stuart (info@footballssg.com) before registering so that he can explain what we need you each to enter on the rego form so that we know to keep you together as a group.

Early bird registration bonuses

Teams that have at least eight players registered before July 23rd will receive two bonuses:

Every player that has registered before that date will get an (approximately) 10% discount on the standard registration fee. The discount is already calculated on the registration form and will revert back up to the standard fee on July 24th.

AND

The team will get to choose their playing colours from our ten available colour-ways. The way this works is:
(1) We record the date and time that each player is registered
(2) We grade all the teams in a particular age group and assemble them in to competitions
(3) In each competition we look to see which teams qualified to choose their colours by having at least eight players registered and, of those, we determine the order in which they were registered based on the date/time their eighth player was registered.
(4) We then contact each team, in the order that they qualified, to obtain their colour choice. The team that qualifies first gets first choice, the team that qualifies second gets second choice, etc etc.
